Keeping Costs Down

Wednesday, September 14, 2005

If you are like most people seeking legal services then you are probably interested in reducing legal fees. I am not suggesting that you do it yourself, but instead I have compiled a list of things you can do or ask your attorney in order to keep your bill as low as possible.
  • Most lawyers charge for time spent on the phone. So keep conversations curt and focused. Consider writing a letter instead, or write an outline for that conversation so you can get everything discussed in a short period of time.
  • Ask if you can save any money by doing your own photocopying if applicable
  • Lawyers bill for travel time, so if possible, meet the lawyer at their office.
  • Make sure you get an itemized bill with detailed information about what you are being billed for. Review of this can help you decide how to save more money.
  • If you are working with a lawyer to compile a document, you can save money by having a detailed outline of what you plan on accomplishing with the document.
  • Tell your attorney everything at the beginning. it is easiest to work with all the information upfront.
  • Ask your lawyer if there is anything you can do to keep the legal costs down.
